Country superstar Kacey Musgraves screens her holiday special where her grandma steals the show. (Nov. 20)
AP EntertainmentChristmas comes early today for fans of Kacey Musgraves as the Nashville star’s new holiday special, “The Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show,” is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Across a gorgeous, diorama-like set, Musgraves and her tight-knit band revisit the songs from her stellar 2016 album, “A Very Kacey Christmas,” and take on some new covers with help from Lana Del Rey, Zooey Deschanel, Camila Cabello and The Rockettes. What’s not to love? Well, if we can indulge our inner Scrooge for a moment … maybe next time, the producers could choose between an actual live show or a pure soundstage product — and not just pipe in audience sounds (and a computer-generated crowd?) when it’s clear there isn’t one. Also, be prepared for a few comedy segments that start with a flimsy premise and then spend the next several minutes running it straight into the ground — who hires Fred Armisen to play the straight man in a sketch, anyway? But hey, bah humbug to all that. It’s a Christmas special for crying out loud, and through its 44 minutes of cheer and cheese, there’s plenty to applaud.Dancing On the Ceiling: During their performance of “Present Without a Bow,” Musgraves and Leon Bridges pay tribute to Fred Astaire’s iconic routine in the “The Royal Wedding,” dancing on the walls and ceiling of a rotating set. Billie Eilish pulled the same stunt on “SNL” in September.”Glittery”: The show’s only brand-new Christmas song — and Musgraves’ first original song since “Golden Hour” — doesn’t disappoint. The grooving ’70s-inspired “Glittery” gets a smooth assist from pop singer Troye Sivan. Our host: No, we’re not talking about narrator Dan Levy, who weaves a good comedic thread through the show. It’s Musgraves, who anchors every scene with impressive ease, finds harmony with every partner, and adlibs with James Corden and Fred Armisen. Lana Del Rey: Her dreamy duet with Kacey Musgraves on “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” is the most inspired collaboration of the bunch, and makes a Christmas album of her own seem like a matter of “if,” not “when.”The grand finale: All the intricate pieces come together during the show-stopping “Ribbons & Bows,” as Musgraves glides through each room of the Wes Anderson-inspired set, followed closely by dancers, costumed Yuletide characters and the Radio City Rockettes.Nana steals the show: Spoiler alert: Musgraves spends the special trying to find the lost star for her Christmas tree and gets it back at the end when it’s delivered to her door by an even bigger star. It’s her real-life Nana, Barbara Musgraves. “This is Nana’s Christmas special if you hear from her,” Musgraves told the AP at the special’s premiere in New York. “I’m just in it.””The Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show” is streaming now exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.Read or Share this story: https://www.tennessean.com/story/entertainment/music/2019/11/29/kacey-musgraves-christmas-show-glittery-amazon-prime-video-exclusive/4313047002/
