Rodney Reed has been granted an indefinite stay of execution today by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals in light of new evidence that could exonerate him. This was a victory for many activists and supporters on social media, including The Shade Room, who used their platforms to bring awareness to Reed’s story in an effort to save his life.Reed was scheduled to be executed next week for the 1996 rape and murder of Stacy Stites, with whom he had a consensual sexual relationship with but maintains that he did not kill her. The appeals court ruled in favor of Reed’s defense team, who filed an appeal this week claiming that Reed is innocent, according to CBS News. They claim that investigators failed to disclose crucial information that could have cleared Reed, and relied on false testimony at his 1998 murder trial. The court said those claims deserved further review and remanded the case back to the trial court, sparing Reed’s life.As his execution date neared, his case received international attention and the petition, which The Shade Room helped circulate, urging clemency for Reed garnered more than 2.9 million signatures. The Innocence Project thanked Reed’s supporters in a tweet on Friday. “Thank you to all who called, tweeted, and spoke out against the execution of an innocent person,” the tweet read. “Today, we celebrate. Tomorrow, we keep working to prove #RodneyReed‘s innocence.”Kim Kardashian also shared that she was with Reed when he received the good news.We are happy about these developments and promise to keep you updated on this case while we pray justice is served.
